The 2013 Volunteer Leadership Conference was held October 25-27 in Ocean City, MD. The annual conference, held in partnership with the Maryland and DC Credit Union Association, was attended by 63 Volunteers and 29 Guests from Delaware Credit Unions. The Maryland/DC credit unions were represented by 71 Volunteers and 14 Guests.
Opening keynote speaker, John Tippets, former president of American Airlines FCU, told an inspirational story about the miraculous 29-day survival story of his father, Joseph Tippets, a former CAA/FAA employee who was on a plane that went down in the Alaskan wilderness in January 1943. Through cooperation and teamwork the four survivors were able to survive in the harsh elements until being rescued by the Coast Guard. The story illustrates that combining fundamental skills and competencies with unshakable courage and determination can lead to success.
Conference participants attended educational sessions on timely topics such as cyber liability, NCUA hot topics, top 10 questions board members should be asking, horror stories from the board room, recruiting new board members, in addition a networking session that focused on sharing success stories. Supervisory committee members participated in an in-depth session on reviewing loans for compliance. Two Bank Secrecy Act training sessions were also offered; and more than 60 volunteers took advantage of the opportunity to become certified, satisfying their training requirement for the year.
The conference ended on Sunday morning with Gigi Hyland, Executive Director of National Credit Union Foundation, providing an enlightening presentation on how credit unions can link with other “people helping people” businesses to build stronger communities. Hyland gave examples of how credit unions can seek opportunities to build and strengthen their community, engage in strategic philanthropy, and build unexpected partnerships in order to build a better community and become a trusted consumer partner.
Throughout the conference, attendees were able to visit with conference sponsors to learn more about their products and services. In addition, conference sponsors provided attendees with the opportunity to network while enjoying delicious hors d'oeuvres and breakfast buffets. We would like to thank our sponsors for their generosity:
