Ruud Gullit
The Dutch legend, Ruud Gullit, was a free agent when he joined Chelsea in 1996. Gullit had already achieved great success with Feyenoord, PSV, and AC Milan, and he brought an air of experience and flair to the club. He also led the Netherlands to the Euro 1988 title as captain, further adding to his impressive resume.
At Chelsea, Gullit's peak came in his first year, as he led the team to an FA Cup victory in 1997, ending a 26-year trophy drought. He made 64 appearances and scored seven goals, winning the League Cup the following year. Despite his success, Gullit's time at Chelsea ended on a sour note, as he departed for Newcastle to become their new boss.

Thiago Silva
Thiago Silva, a Brazilian defender, joined Chelsea as a free agent in 2020, after spending four seasons at Stamford Bridge. He had been successful domestically at PSG and AC Milan but had never won the Champions League. However, he achieved his dream in his debut campaign with the Blues, winning the European trophy under Thomas Tuchel.
Silva spent three more years at Chelsea, making 155 appearances and becoming the first defender since John Terry in 2006 to win the Player of the Year award in 2023. He then rejoined Fluminense in 2024, before heading to Porto to lift the league title, and finally returning to Brazil earlier this summer.
Winston Bogarde
Winston Bogarde, a Dutch defender, joined Chelsea as a free agent in 2000, after struggling in Spain and England following a Champions League win with Ajax. He was mentored by Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands and joined Barcelona in 1998, but injuries and Van Gaal's diminishing influence meant he was seeking other opportunities.
Bogarde failed to make an impact during his four years at Stamford Bridge, making just 12 appearances and claiming that Chelsea's financial issues stopped him from forcing a loan move or transfer. He spoke to The Guardian in 2015, stating that Vialli bought him, but when he had been there a week, he got sacked. He had to look at the new manager's plans and whether he would still get a chance.
In my opinion, Chelsea's spending on free agents is a strategic move, as it allows them to bring in experienced players who can make an immediate impact. However, it also carries the risk of signing players who may not live up to expectations, as seen with Winston Bogarde. The club's ability to balance their spending and bring in quality players is a testament to their strategic approach to building a strong squad.
