The airspace over El Paso has been closed for an unprecedented duration of ten days, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Such extended airspace closures are quite uncommon. In fact, the FAA's data indicates that since 2018, they have managed to reduce the average duration of airspace restrictions from over four hours per launch down to just slightly more than two hours.
This particular restriction encompasses a 10-mile radius surrounding El Paso, extending into parts of southern New Mexico and westward towards the town of San Teresa.
What raises eyebrows is that this notice was issued without any prior alert to local authorities or air traffic control personnel, as pointed out by local official Canales. He noted, "There are some individuals experiencing a degree of panic because of the rarity of this situation. If you look at El Paso on the map, you can understand its unique geographical context."
To put things into perspective, Ciudad Juarez in Mexico is located immediately to the south and west of El Paso, while the U.S. Army's Fort Bliss and the White Sands Missile Range are situated to the north. Fort Bliss serves as a military installation dedicated to training operations, whereas White Sands Missile Range is recognized as the largest overland testing facility in the United States for missiles, rockets, and advanced weaponry.
In a recent post on Facebook, the City of El Paso stated that all flights from El Paso International Airport had been halted. This includes not only commercial flights but also cargo and general aviation services. The airport advised travelers to reach out to their respective airlines for the latest updates regarding flight statuses.
The BBC has reached out to both the FAA and the city of El Paso for further comments.
And here's where it gets controversial: Could the lack of communication regarding this airspace closure indicate a larger issue with how such decisions are made? What impact do you think this will have on travelers and local communities? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
