A controversial plan is stirring up a storm, and it's not just any ordinary project - it's a 90,000-square-foot addition to the iconic White House, and the public is having none of it!
The National Capital Planning Commission has received an overwhelming response, with over 9,000 pages of comments denouncing President Trump's ballroom project. This plan has sparked an intense debate, with people questioning the very essence of the White House's future.
But here's where it gets interesting... the public's reactions are diverse and passionate. From calling it a "complete DISASTER" to expressing outrage over the massive addition overshadowing the White House's grandeur, people are not holding back. One commenter even pleaded, "NO GAUDY FAKE GOLD STUFF ALL OVER THE PLACE!"
The concerns are not just limited to aesthetics. Logistical nightmares are a major worry, with thoughts of extra kitchen facilities and sets of china needed to accommodate the larger crowds. Susan Dolibois, a former East Wing staffer from the Nixon era, wrote, "No one wants to be in an adjunct building with lengthened security protocols."
Arrington Dixon, a former D.C. Council member with 30 years of experience on the NCPC, has never seen such a flood of public comments. He estimates over 32,000 submissions, a clear indication of the public's engagement and passion on this issue.
Architects from across the country have also voiced their opinions. Charles Luebke from Missouri called it an "eyesore," while Donald Horn from Omaha added, "The fast-track process is appalling." Ron Nestor from Irvine, California, went further, calling it an "abomination."
Alison Hoagland, a D.C. preservationist, offered a balanced view: "Constructing a ballroom is possible, but it should enhance, not overwhelm, the White House."
Even a Republican Congressman, Michael Turner from Ohio, expressed "substantial concerns" about the demolition in a recently released letter. He wrote, "The images of the East Wing's demolition were deeply disturbing to those who value our nation's history."
And this is the part most people miss... the public's call for bipartisanship. One individual, who has been a Republican, Democrat, and Independent, called the demolition a "disgrace."
While supportive comments are few and far between, some have offered practical advice, such as an arts center requesting ADA-compliant assistive listening systems.
The NCPC, with its project authority over every detail, from tree placement to lightbulb lumens, will play a crucial role. A staff report advises the architect, Shalom Baranes, to refine the design to be "architecturally deferential" to the executive mansion.
Many anticipate the NCPC to follow the lead of the Commission on Fine Arts, another Trump-stacked panel that suddenly approved the design last month. Thursday's meeting is expected to be heated, with around a hundred people registered to testify virtually.
Some critics will even target the NCPC itself, chaired by Will Scharf, who is also the White House staff secretary and Trump's former personal lawyer. One person's prepared testimony accuses Scharf of being "complicit in the destruction of a national monument."
The commission may take more testimony after the meeting before a final vote at its April gathering, as Dixon explained.
As Trump basked in the sounds of construction outside the White House during a Medal of Honor ceremony, he boasted, "It's going to be the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world."
But not everyone is convinced. One commenter responded, "Too large, gauche, Russian-like, and out of proportion to our beautiful historic White House."
