Wegovy Weight Loss Pill Now Available: Cost, Effectiveness, and Side Effects Explained (2026)

The weight-loss drug market is about to get a major shake-up! Americans can now access the starter dose of the highly popular Wegovy in a daily pill form, offering a convenient alternative to the weekly injection. But here's where it gets controversial: the original injection's price tag was steep, leaving many patients struggling to afford it. The pill, however, is a game-changer, with a lower cost for those willing to pay directly.

Novo Nordisk, the drug maker, announced this exciting news on Monday. The 1.5 mg starter dose of the pill is priced at $149 per month for cash-paying patients, thanks to a deal with the Trump administration. But there's a catch: the price will increase to $199 after April 15. Higher doses of the pill come with a heftier price tag, reaching $299 per month for the 9 mg and 25 mg doses.

The injectable Wegovy, on the other hand, costs $349 monthly for self-pay consumers, though new patients can get a discounted rate for the first two months. For those with insurance coverage, the savings are even more significant, with the pill or injection costing as little as $25 per month. Wegovy's benefits go beyond weight loss; it's also approved to reduce heart attack and stroke risks in adults with obesity and heart disease.

The US Food and Drug Administration approved the daily pill version in December, with clinical trials showing similar weight loss and side effects compared to the injection. The pill contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, found in Wegovy and the diabetes drug Ozempic.

Rival pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly is also in the race with their oral GLP-1 medication, orforglipron. It's expected to be approved by the FDA soon and will be available at the same starting price as Wegovy. But here's a twist: additional doses of orforglipron will cost up to $399 for cash-paying patients.

GLP-1 medications have gained immense popularity, with 1 in 8 US adults reportedly taking one of these drugs. While Wegovy and orforglipron haven't been directly compared in trials, both have demonstrated impressive weight loss results. Wegovy's pill showed an average weight loss of 14% over 64 weeks, while orforglipron achieved 11% weight loss over 72 weeks on its highest dose.

Side effects are a crucial consideration. Gastrointestinal issues like nausea and vomiting are common with GLP-1 drugs, and the Wegovy pill trial reported 7% of participants discontinuing treatment due to side effects, compared to 6% on placebo. Orforglipron's study showed up to 10% of patients stopping treatment, a notable difference.

One notable difference between the medications is the timing and restrictions. Wegovy's pill must be taken on an empty stomach with water, and patients are advised to avoid eating, drinking, or taking other medicines for 30 minutes after. This could impact patient compliance, as seen with Rybelsus, a similar semaglutide pill for diabetes.

Eli Lilly promotes orforglipron's flexibility, as it can be taken anytime without food or water restrictions. This convenience factor might be a deciding factor for many patients.
